  •   “I joined BGK is because it provided me with a daycarecenterwhere my son could be cared for while I work. He enjoys the centerand learns new games and activities daily. It is a relief to know that my son has a safe place to spend his day while I work.”

I am the Director of BGK and work as an Accountant for the company. I have been working with the company since 2008. I was born and brought up in Kerala, where I did a professional course in accounting. After my marriage I came to Bangalore and started working as an accountant in an IT solutions company. When my son was born, I was unable to manage the long commutes to and from my house. In order to take care of my son, I was forced to quit my job.

During that time a neighborhoodfriend informed me about Industree Foundation andthe creation of Ashraya Self Help Group (SHG) in Kormangala and suggested that I join the SHG as an accountant.I applied and got the job. Over the years I was promoted to the level of Director. One of the benefits of working at BGKisthe daycare center where my son could be cared for while I work. He enjoys the center and learns new games and activities daily. It is a relief to know that my son has a safe place to spend his day while I work. It is these small efforts that encourage women to take up a profession. I know a lot of women in my team who have young children. It is only because of the day care that they are able to continue their work.

With the help of the training provided by my mentor Mahendran Sir from Industree Foundation, I have been able to learn Inventory Management in addition to accounting. Today Imanagethe complete flow of materials inward and outward from the company.

As one of the directors of the company, I also overlook the entire production process at BGK and ensure that timelines are met and safety procedures are being followed. Three teams report directly to me. It is definitely a lot of pressure, but I feel a sense of ownership towards the company.

Through the SHG savings program I was able to take a loan for my son’s education at a good school. From a meagre salary of INR 4000 to a salary of INR 13000, I now feel confident that I can provide my son with many opportunities.
