In spite of having the world's largest and most varied skill base in the creative manufacturing sector, India only commands 2 % of the global market share. A broken value chain is the reason for it. Across the country, most artisans and small entrepreneurs work in isolation, having to depend on middlemen for access to raw material, capital or even getting their product into the market. What is also lacking is a steady flow of orders which renders artisans helpless, not knowing from where or when their next source of income will come in. And women, who comprise a majority of the workforce, are at the bottom of the value chain, sometimes earning less than half what the men doing the same work, earning less than half what their male counterparts do.
As these artisans are best suited to feeding fashion and lifestyle markets that are growing at a great pace globally, it is clear that it is the fragmented value chain that is keeping this wonderfully skilled population from realising their true potential.
Mission Creative Million
Industree has initiated Mission Creative Million focusing on celebrating the skills and cultural legacy of creative producers. Using the power of technology and the smart phone revolution, it aims to startup 30,000 small inclusive enterprises impacting one million artisans who will be tied together on a single platform, in the next 10 years. It strives to create economic and social impact for artisans by creating an ecosystem that will help them access skilling, capital, design and market aggregation. This mission envisions a Creative Revolution of the calibre of the 'White Revolution' in the dairy industry or the 'Green Revolution' in agriculture, by harnessing the cultural and entrepreneurial skills of the artisans who form the soul of the creative manfacturing indusry.
Creative Million is being anchored by Industree Foundation in partnership with impact organisations like Social Venture Partners India, Womanity Foundation - Geneva, Grassroots Business Fund - Washington, technology consultancies Mindtree and Sonata Software, and design school Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology; we envision our partner network growing further as the project builds momentum.
